Have you ever seen a really good fight? One where the bad guy gets knocked to the ground and the champion wins? That's how God wants it to be between you and sin. The Bible describes the Christian life as a battle between our new spiritual self and our old sinful self. God said to the first humans, "You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master" (Genesis 4:7). Sin is an enemy, waiting to conquer you. But sometimes it seems so hard to subdue it, right? Even the great apostle Paul felt this way. He said, "I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate" (Romans 7:15).
So how can you win the fight with sin? The short answer is you can't; we are all too weak. But the long answer is that Jesus has already won the fight for you. Go back to that fight in your mind. Imagine that the guy you want to win is too weak, and it looks like he is going to lose. But right as the enemy has him on the ground, a very strong hero comes in and saves the day. That’s what Jesus did for you when He died and rose from the dead. Colossians 2:15 says Jesus "disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross." Jesus won the fight for you! Now our job is to continue to walk in His victory through walking with the Holy Spirit every day. It's like going on a walk with a friend who knows the way. You need to listen to his directions. The Holy Spirit is leading you on a good path. If you haven't been walking with Him, take a moment right now to ask His forgiveness and lead you again. Find out more how to conquer sin and walk with the Holy Spirit in this section.
